Month two: 22,500 page views, 2,600 visits

Jobzle had a great October! We didn’t quite match the traffic we saw in the first month, but we saw a very interesting difference:
Students who visited the website is October were almost twice as likely to sign up, and twice as likely to submit 1 or more job applications.

The Overview

Bump up the pages: The first thing we noticed is that October saw our “page views per visit” bump up dramatically. The average user in October was viewing almost 9 pages per visit (September’s average was 5 pages per visit).

City Vs. City

Providence once again topped the charts, but get ready for a much different November – we’ve just hired campus representatives from the University of Rhode Island to help recruit students.

Jobzle featured in Providence Monthly

Hi Everyone!

Providence Monthly is running an October feature on Providence’s new knowledge economy, and highlights Jobzle as one of “four cool companies making Providence smarter.”  You can read Providence Monthly online at this address: http://www.providenceonline.com/providencemonthly/read.html.  The article starts on page 35, and Jobzle is on page 39.

Let us know what you think!

Cheerio

Our first month: 25,000 page views, 5,300 visits (more stats in the article + free t-shirts)

Wow, thanks for the amazing response Rhode Island. We’ve had 25,000 page views and 5,300 visits in our first month! We wanted to share our successes and failures with you:

The Overview

Our first month is drawing to a close, lets see where we did well and where we did badly:

Our biggest day: Wednesday, September 15th (744 visits, 2,624 page views) – The day we launched our Facebook campaign
Our slowest day: Saturday, September 25th (46 visits, 340 page views) – Day of the Brown vs. Harvard homecoming football game

Generally, we’re really happy with our first month – it was above and beyond our expectations. That said, we know we’ve got work to do and we plan on keeping up the pace throughout October.

Weekends Are For Parties

One of the most obvious emerging trends we’ve seen is that students just don’t search for jobs as often over the weekend. Mondays and Wednesdays appear to be the most common day to search!

City Vs. City

We’ve also been tracking our progress city by city – and it looks like Providence has been the quickest to respond – take a look at the top 10 cities by visits:

For us, that means we’ve got some serious work to do at the campuses outside Providence. Over the next couple weeks we plan on hiring campus representatives at each of the 11 schools in Rhode Island and getting the word out with flyers, free t-shirts etc!

We also just got in a massive shipment of 300 t-shirts and tank tops. If you want to grab your very own Jobzle T-shirt or tank, you can:

Walker writes about his experience at Betaspring for Xconomy.com

Hi Everyone,

Walker has an article on Xconomy.com this morning: http://www.xconomy.com/boston/2010/09/24/how-i-spent-my-summer-in-startup-boot-camp/.  It’s about Walker’s and Jobzle’s experience at the Betaspring start-up accelerator program this past summer.  Check it out!

Here we go!

Phew!  It’s been a hectic week and a half inside the Jobzle rabbit hole.  Everything is up and cooking for employers and students.  If you haven’t checked us out yet, make sure that you do – and let us know what you think!

There are great opportunities available on Jobzle right now.  The Rhode Island State Government has listed their internships for the Fall, Spring and Summer – with placements that span the entire State government, from the General Assembly to the Rhode Island Supreme Court.  FM Global has 5 positions up, including a Business Analyst Internship and an Application Developer Co-op program.  There are openings at Bay Computer Associates, Betaspring, Providence After School Alliance, ninedot, WLNE-TV / ABC 6, the Rhode Island Tech Collective, A Better World by Design, Inspiring Minds, Ananke IT Solutions, New York Life, and more.

A few days after we listed the Rhode Island State Government internships, Robert Gemma, the Director of State Internships, called me to say that he had just hired a student through Jobzle.  I was ecstatic.  Even though his programs are awesome enough to sell themselves, I chalked it up as a win.

Students? We have students registered from 9 Rhode Island schools (out of 11).  We have campus representatives at Brown University, the Rhode Island School of Design, and Johnson and Wales University, and will have them very shortly at Providence College, Bryant University, and the University of Rhode Island.  We’ll be strutting our stuff at upcoming career fairs.  But most importantly, we’ll be doing our thing on Facebook – no, not Facebook advertising.  ’Organic’ outreach. Groundswell.  Think Obama in ’07 / ’08.  Or dancing baby circa 1996.  There’s no way we can top dancing baby – cause baby’s got moves – but our path to popularity (among students) is similar: push something to others in a creative way until it pushes itself.

Here’s a nugget of wisdom to help you start your week: Fortes fortuna adiuvat.  If on the path to achieving your fortune you need to hire college students as interns or part-time workers – you know where to find us!

Cheerio.

Posting a job on Jobzle (with a video)

Here’s “Job Posting”, the next installment of our blog series on Jobzle features.  After some complaints that the “job search” video didn’t have any sound, we decided to bring a little spice to this next clip.  Check out how easy it is to post a job on Jobzle (with a special performance by Prince):

Searching with Jobzle (with a video!)

The first feature we’ll cover this week is Jobzle search, or the processes that students use to search for jobs and filter results. If that sounds boring……get out. No, I’m kidding. I thought it was pretty boring myself, until I saw it. Turns out it’s one of the coolest components of our website.

Bam! The Jobzle Job Search in all its glory. If Tom Ford was a web designer and he rocked, he’d probably have one or two websites in his portfolio as smokin’ hot as the Jobzle Job Search page. One or two. That’s how awesome this page is. And we don’t have Tom Ford the web designer. We don’t even have Ralph Lauren. We have some New Zealand guy named Walker – and he’s insane.

So taking a look at the page, the first thing you’ll notice is Google maps. We put a big map right above the search results, because we know most students have limits to how far they can travel for work. With Craigslist, forgetaboutit. You have to keep switching back and forth between browser windows, job – map, job – map, job – map, to get the same experience. Who enjoys that?

The search results are first displayed in reverse chronological order. If you want to refine them further, use the filters on the left-hand side of the page. The first filter is “job type.” Use this to hide jobs you will never apply for: for example, if you’re looking for opportunities to make a few dollars for an upcoming weekend, you’re probably not interested in applying for internships or volunteer work. Just tick off those volunteer and internship boxes and you’re ready to go.

Below the “job type” filter is our distance filter. Job seekers can manipulate this filter to narrow their search results down to jobs that are located near their homes. Next are the pay filters. We have these categorized to suit anyone’s metric: dollars per hour, dollars per month, dollars in my hand right now. Slide these sliders whichever way to find the jobs that pay your worth. Which, to be frank, is not a whole lot more than $7.00 an hour.

Here is the same search results page after I used our filters. Only 3 search results instead of 12! Magic? Jobzle.

Our first step towards going live!

As we prepare for our September 8th launch, we’re slowly beginning to bring the website live.  This Friday, www.jobzle.com will come alive (secretly) for our business subscribers.

We’ll also be uploading product videos throughout the week to show people how Jobzle actually functions.

The first blog post is about searching for jobs on Jobzle.com.  Can a blog post about search tools be exciting?  You bet your ass it can.  Everything about Jobzle is exciting.

Oh, and I want to stress that our official launch is not happening this week, but rather we’re opening the service up early so businesses can get acquainted with the system and begin to post their jobs.

Jobzle in the Providence Journal!

Jobzle got a little coverage in the Providence Journal today, there was a photo in the print edition but not in the digital version – which I’m going to view as a positive because I’m sporting a crew cut in the photo.  Things are moving really quickly here, I’ve included a screenshot of our search results to show you just how far things have come.
